JARED'S REPORT
EIGHT FOR EIGHT/NINE FOR NINE/ AND TEN FOR TEN
We finally got within driving distance of an ice race. Bloomington, IL was our next round after Colorado. It has been on the Schedule for a few years now, and has always been won by JR Schnabel. But with the run of wins we had coming into this year’s race I was thinking we had a good shot at ending his streak. JR decided to bring one of his dirt track race bikes out for this race.
The last few races I have been drawing some pretty bad numbers for Heat starting positions—either 3rd out or 4th out—4th out being the worst. I won the first Heat race of the night and was on my way to winning the second when, coming out of turn 4 towards the checkered flag, I stalled the bike. JR won both of his Heat races so that put him on the pole. Ribbon went up and he got the hole shot. I quickly got around him and was looking good until Bryan McKenna fell down coming off of turn 2. I went around him and JR went up the inside and passed me back. I then set him up and drove underneath him and put in some hard laps that made it possible to bring it home and end JR’s streak of Bloomington wins. JR came in 2nd with Jeremy DeRuyter 3rd.
My buddy Mike Wells and I drove all night long to make it to our big Ice National the very next day in Mt. Pleasant, MI only to have it get rained out. So no Ice National this year.
Troy, OH –29 Jan 2010
Next round was in Troy, OH. They just kept getting closer to me—I love it. Only 3.5 hours away !! Still I did not pick any good numbers for my Heats. JR was in my one Heat with me. I was able to win both Heats and sit on the pole. I didn’t take the Motion Pro Challenge this time either, which would have gave me another $500 bucks had I won from the back row! I grabbed the hole shot and put in some hard laps. The ice was very soft so it snowed up on us very quickly, taking away a lot of the lines. I felt I rode somewhat timidly but it was good enough to bring home another win. Kevin Anderson came in 2nd and JR 3rd. I drove home that night and the next day, Saturday, we had the race at Muskegon, MI.
There is no closer race for me than this one and some friends came out to watch. I won both of my Heats, putting me on the pole on the front row because I also had fast time. There were four other winners of both of their Heats but, since they do time the races, my fastest time was the tie-breaker. I did not take the Motion Pro Challenge then either. It just didn’t feel like I could make it work that night. I grabbed the hole shot and put in some really hard, aggressive laps. Looking back I saw that I had a good lead over the second rider. Then Jeremy DeRuyter fell down and when he picked his bike back up he got into my race line a little bit. I managed to get by him clean and bring home my 10th win in a row. JR came in 2nd and Kevin Anderson was 3rd.
The Indoor ice racing has been really good for me this year. We have four rounds remaining and it would be nice to keep this streak alive. I know the rest of the guys are gunning for me, so we will see.
Other than that am just trying to get ready for Daytona. My Singles are pretty much ready to go except for a few minor things. I’ve been working hard and riding quite a bit, hoping this year is as good as the last. It’s going to be hard.... there is a lot of excellent riders out there.
